INTRODUCTION
This book is for those of you who know deep within yourself that something is wrong with the way we live. While others see progress, you see the inner exasperation that comes with trying to keep up with that progress. You may not be able to put your finger on what it is exactly, but you know through your own experience that the stories we have been told are not necessarily true. You know you don’t precisely fit the mold of a perfect citizen and have probably been labeled different or strange because you don’t see things the way others do. You may have been a misfit as a child, you may have been called a non-conformist or some other name that implies you are uncommon.
You may have dropped out of school, realizing it to be too constricting, or you may have gone on to higher education in order to get along or to make a contribution to society.
You may have jumped from one thing to another trying to find a place where you belong. You may have tried different religions looking for truth, but have yet to find one with the answers you seek.
You may be a person with a great deal of intelligence but cannot explain how you know what you know. You may be someone who knows a lot about a vast number of things, but is not a specialist in any one of them. You may have suffered from sadness, loneliness and maybe depression, not from some defect in your genes, but rather from the compression of a culture demanding you to conform. You may be fifty years old or you may be fifteen. Wisdom is perhaps a function of age and experience, but intelligence is not. You look out into the world and cannot understand why some people live in mansions and others live in boxes with their only address being, “This End Up.” You don’t understand the drive for further computerization and are offended at the way it is used to entertain children. You find television to be a stupid and insidious waste of time. In other words you are not like most people. You know this society is headed in the wrong direction and you don’t know how to stop it.
If these descriptions apply to you then you should, “Advance to Go” and read on. If, on the other hand, you are comfortable with the direction our culture is heading and feel technology is going to save us from ourselves, I suggest you just put this book down, as it will only irritate you and make you angry. You then will feel a need to attack or blame me for punching holes in your belief systems. So let’s not even bother. If you are a devout capitalist, materialist, religious moral majority type, don’t waste your time. This book is not for you. I think I have given fair warning.
