Boy oh boy. What do you want to know? There are too many types of laws: constitution law, criminal law, civil law, tort law, immigration law, contract and business law, environmental law, and so many.

I can't tell you everything.

Let me tell you one major concept though. Most western countries adopt an approach which we call "common law" or "case law".

Case law is more accurate in meaning. For instance, the laws in a common law country only spells out the major principles and the details will be drafted in the Regulations or interpretered by a case ruling.

For example, in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act in Canada, the minimum requirement of residence is 730 days in 5 years, which is the principle. The officers will then determine whether the 730 days means calendar days or business days and 5 years means 5 calendar years or something else.

If a citizen is not satisfied with the officer's interpretation, he can bring the case to court to ask for a ruling. The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled 730 days are 730 calendar days.

This is the case law concept, which is very different from the Continental or Napolean Law in some countries like China and Mexico.
