6. The legacyof Keith Pavitt
Two papers were presented at the conference in honour
ofKeith Pavitt which contribute not only to our better
understanding of Keith’s academic legacy but also
of the development of the wider scholarly community
which his work has so greatly influenced.We have emphasised
the scholarly legacy that Keith has left, but
it is equally important to remember how Keith continually
strove to build a global community of scholars
of technology and innovation. Two papers presented at
the conference define these contributions powerfully. In
their paper, “The scientometric world of Keith Pavitt: a
tribute to his contributions to research policy and patent
analysis”, Martin Meyer (SPRU, KUL), Tiago Santos
Pereira (CES, University of Coimbra), Olle Persson
(Inforsk, Ume°a University) and Ove Granstrand (CIP,
Chalmers, Gothenburg) use bibliometrics to paint a
map of Keith’s legacy. The authors trace the evolution of Keith’s scholarly work and, using citation analysis,
they discuss the impact that this work has had on
bringing together the scholarly communities of management,
economics and policy.
Finally, BartVerspagen and ClaudiaWerker use network
analysis to explore and describe the scholarly
community that has emerged in the field of the economics
of innovation, a community in which Keith
Pavitt played a central role in linking groups from
around the world. The article, “Keith Pavitt and the
invisible college of the economics of technology and
innovation”, provides a powerful and graphical demonstration
of the emergence of our community and the evolution of this field of study.
