[注释](1)因在国际互联网上尚未查到英译“八荣八耻”全文，只好自不量力地自译，以便于同英语笔友交流。一百个译者恐怕会有一百多种译法，这里的译文只能算是其中的一种，无意与别人的比高低，但希望能把横挑鼻子、竖挑眼的笔友钩出来评头品足一番，从而使译文能进一大步，更多一些地向原文的神貌靠拢。

(2)本译文不想把“八荣八耻”直译为“8 honors and 8 shames”主要是考虑以英语为母语的外国读者会不解其内在含义，所以将其解释性地译为“Take the eight glorious merits against eight shameful behaviors ”[以八条光荣的优点或美德来对抗八条可耻的举止]

(3)本译文没有过多迁就某些成文的语法规则，较看重译文在社会交际中的实际效果。比如“以热爱祖国为荣”若按英文的要求应该译为“We should take loving our motherland as a glorious merit” 因为英语一般不能轻易地省略句子的主语而动词的原形(love)也不能直接充当句子成分[或用其现在分词、过去分词、动名词或用其不定式]；但是〈‘Love our motherland 'as glory〉这种并不规范的句子，“老外”是完全可以接受的。当然，重要的是你得有过种交流的实践。张道真的语法书告诉学生，开始见到某人时要说“I am glad to meet you.”告别时还想说“见到你很高兴”应该说“I am glad to have met you.”实际上，没有几个美国人愿自找麻烦，把这种礼貌用语说得这么复杂，而只是说“Nice to meet you .”就了事了。

(4)是因为近来有学英语的大学生、博士生等学子们常问及“八荣八耻”怎么译，才不得说几句题外的话。全国大学英语教育从来就不把汉译外或中译英等当回事，把所谓“翻译法”教学说得一无是处、几乎被批得体无完肤。全国大学英语教学大纲上只讲“听、说、读、写”，故意把“译”压缩到“写”中去。多年来，绝大多数学生把中文翻译成英文的能力是很差的，至今仍没有引起有关方面的高度重视。学了10年乃至16年、18年英语的学生至今不懂怎么处理翻译中的词性如何转换等问题。重视中文翻译成外文的教育，实际上正是让中国文化走向世界的战略问题。全国许多家英语学习期刊也总是强调引进所谓地道的外文却很少把心思放在中文如何能地道的转化为外文的研究上。笔者早就呼吁过，中国人既要知道外国的马克思们怎么说的，也要让外国人知道中国的“诸葛亮”们都是怎么说的，你不会翻译怎么了得？！(朱曼华)(来源/欧美同学会网站）
