Game of the day: Remember: It's the knockout round. All teams must win to progress.

First up is England-Ecuador, a game that the English cannot take lightly. England is currently in what we might call a "crisis of confidence." It did not impress its supporters in the first round and is suffering the wobblies up top with the loss of Michael Owen and the incomplete form of Wayne Rooney. It has worries in the back with keeper Paul Robinson looking more like Calamity James than, well, David James. And midfield play — it's really not up to snuff, is it?

Ecuador has shocked most observers (including us) with their skilled play outside of the high-altitude stadium that grants them such a huge advantage in qualifying. We think, however, that they were exposed by the Germans in Berlin and could be ripe for conquest.

England is going to have to contain Carlos Tenorio and Edison Mendez up top, however.

Second up on the day is Portugal-Holland in what is arguably the first true clash of heavyweights. And this is, dare we say, one delicious matchup.

Just look at the rosters, man: Arjen Robben. Cristiano Ronaldo. Luis Figo. Edwin van der Saar, Costinha. Carvahlo. Deco. van Persie, Cocu, Babel.

Portugal has won six straight. The Dutch have lost only ONE game out of their last 24. Portugal's in the second round for the first time since 1966. Holland has beaten them just once in nine attempts. Both teams are notorious for epic collapse in the most tragic possible way.

What a game.

Wouldn't it be nice if: Ecuador sent all those English fans home? This "Wouldn't it be nice if?" brought to you by the Stuttgart police department.

Trecker's take: Portugal-Holland cannot be missed by anyone who considers themselves a fan of the sport. And, personally, we don't think England has to worry much at this moment and should ease up on their team.

Guus slams Japan snipes

Socceroos coach Guus Hiddink has described comments made by Japanese Football Association chief Saburo Kawabuchi as "irresponsible behaviour".
Kawabuchi earlier sparked tensions between the two sides on the eve of Australia's clash with Japan with a provocative interview.
"Australia are guilty of a lot of dirty fouls," Kawabuchi told Japanese Sport Daily Hochi. "They target ankles in particular. Japan must stand up to them."
All has, however, not been well within the Japanese camp. Hidetoshi Nakata, once the most popular player in Japan, has already complained that the atmosphere within the squad was "too friendly" and "amateurish".
Nakata was not happy with the way his teammates played in the 1-0 win over minows Malta in their final warm-up game.
Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura, the only player who has dared to cross swords with Nakata, suggested his fellow midfielder should lighten up.
But Nakata still put the boot in. Japan, he said openly, were "not ready" for the World Cup. "We're hardly at the stage where we can suddenly change things," Nakata told journalists. "What we're missing is the heart."
Nakata is no stranger to controversy. He was involved in frequent run-ins with former coach Philippe Troussier before the 2002 World Cup.
Goalkeeper Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi refuses to see any negative fallout from the row.
"It's natural to voice your dissatisfaction when things aren't going the way you want them to," he said.
The Aussies, on the other hand, have developed a strong spirit of unity and togetherness within their camp. Not a word of discord has emanated from the Socceroos. Even fierce rivals for the goalie's jersey - Mark Schwarzer and Zeljo Kalac - have kept their counsel.
Sheltered in a five-star, former palace in Friedrichsruhe, they have avoided the media hype in large measure. On Sunday, they headed to Kaiserslautern for an overnight stay that will thrust them into the spotlight at Germany 06.
Skipper Mark Viduka admits that being insulated from the hype could work to the Socceroos' advantage.
Defeat against Japan would almost certainly condemn Australia to a first-round exit, unless they can conjure up a miracle against world champions Brazil in their Munich encounter on June 18.

题目:Rooney expected to start for England

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has suggested he may rest some players on yellow cards for their final Group B game against Sweden on Tuesday - when Wayne Rooney is expected to start.
With England already safely through to the Round of 16 after two wins from two games, Eriksson has hinted that a combination of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch could miss the Sweden match.

They are all one booking away from suspension and while a second yellow card on Tuesday would leave them suspended for the second round, players on single yellows do not carry them forward from the first stage. "If we had to win to go through I would probably risk all three, but we don't need to do that," Eriksson said. “I don't want to leave all three out - maybe one or two.”

Rooney, who made his comeback after seven weeks out with a fractured metatarsal as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, is an obvious candidate to come in for Crouch if the Liverpool striker is one of those players who do not feature. Eriksson said: "Together with our medical staff we discussed it and they think and I think he can play more than 45 minutes.

"And if it's more than 45 minutes then it is better he starts the game than coming on. He is very important for us because he's a fantastic player." The Swede admitted that England were "a different team" with Rooney playing and he added: "He has been telling me he's fit and ready for the last three weeks."

It is expected that Rooney and Michael Owen will start together up front. Owen, like David Beckham, is hoping to become the first Englishman to score in three FIFA World Cup™ finals, though he has been struggling for form and fitness and was taken off in favour of Rooney against Trinidad and Tobago.
Midfield combinations
England’s midfield options seem more open and if either Gerrard or Lampard are rested, it is possible that Michael Carrick or Owen Hargreaves may come in, though Aaron Lennon was an impressive substitute on the right against Trinidad and Tobago in Nuremberg on Thursday.

If Lennon were to start on the right flank, England captain Beckham could be given a more central role. Opponents Sweden only need a draw to ensure their passage to the second round, though England have not beaten Eriksson’s home country since 1968 and are hoping to reverse the trend in Cologne.

A victory or draw for England would see them finish as winners of Group B and leave them facing a second-round match against the runners-up of Group A – either Germany or Ecuador – in Stuttgart on Sunday.

Three points for the Swedes would leave them on top of the group and see England travelling to Munich to play the Group A winners on Saturday.
