Many of the now well-established professions started life as semi-professions and have since graduated along the continuum to take on more of the characteristics of the profession. In the early nineteenth century there was a very narrow knowledge base to even medicine. At the end of the century the same applied to accountancy. They too have grown into a more professional mould. Internal audit is still farther back along this path, but is travelling comparatively faster than did, for example, accountancy.
