But alas! Qin Huang and Han Wu In culture not well bred,
12.昔秦皇汉武，略输文采。
And Tang Zong and Song Zu In letters not wide read.
13.唐宗宋祖，稍逊风骚。
And Genghis Khan6, proud son of Heaven for a day,
14.一代天骄，成吉思汗，
Knew only shooting eagles by bending his bows。
15.只识弯弓射大雕。
They have all passed away;
16.俱往矣，
Brilliant heroes are those ，Whom we will see today!

Notes:
1 Author’s note: Highlands of Shaanxi and Shanxi.
2 Qin Huang or Qin Shihuang (259-210 B.C.) was the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, who had founded a unified empire in 221 B.C.
3 Han Wu or Han Wuti (156-87 B.C.) was the fifth emperor of the Han Dynasty, who had resisted foreign aggression.
4 Tang Zong or Tang Taizong (599-649) was the second emperor of the Tang Ddynasty, who had made China one of the strongest countries in the world.
5 Song Zu or Song Taizu (927-976) was the first emperor of Song Dynasty.
6 Genghis Khan (1162-1227) was the first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, who had made a western expedition as far as Europe.

Both side of the Great Wall
One single white immensity.
The Yellow River's swift current
Is stilled from end to end.
The mountains dance silver snakes
And the highland charge like wax-hued elephants.
Vying with heaven in stature.
On a fine day, the land,
Clad in white, adorned in red,
Crows more enchanting.

This land so rich in beauty
Has made countless heroes bow in homage.
But alas! Qin Shihuang and Han Wudi
Were lacking in literary grace,
And Tang Taizong and Song Taizu
Had little poetry in their souls;
That proud son of Heaven,
Genghis Khan,
Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched.
All are past and gone!
For truly great men
Look to this age alone.
