begin 表示“开始”，其内涵是“使处于进程中”

这座房子在我姐姐离开之前就已经动工了。

他几乎马上便开始抱怨天气了，……
start 表示“开始”，其内涵是“启程”。例如，“那次会议是上星期开始的”(The meeting began last week.)会议是个“过程”，在这个意义上用 begin 恰当；而“千里之行始于足下”(A thousand-li journey is started by taking the first step.)所包含的意义是启步， 所以用 start 恰当。
He started to complain about this wicked world…
他开始抱怨这万恶的世道了。……
注：begin 和 start 有时可以通用，如上面的第二句与第三句。即使可以互换，它们含义的侧重点也有所不同。某过程的停止实际上是“结束”，这时应当用 end。
The dream he had had for so many years ended there.
他做了那么许多年的梦就此结束了。

Many people who are learning English are often puzzled by this.
Actually,it is easy to distinguish the two words.
Begin means "the time when sth. happen",it emphasize particularly on "time".
Start emphasize particularly on the action to turn things at rest to at motion.
