This book is based on a course of lectures given by Feynman at the California Institute of Technology. These lectures are designed for freshmen of physics department as a introduction to physics . So this book is different from others on physics. Feynman shows great influence on it.
In fact , Feynman was not a professional teacher ,his major work was research on quantum dynamics electricity(量子电动力学)and he was awarded the Nobel prize for his great contribution to quantum dynamics electricity in 1965. So as scientist , his education methods are very different from traditional ways.
Firstly ,he can easily catch the essence of physical phenomenon . So the problem explained by him are all based on the fundamental principle, not some surface knowledge .Then students can think and understand physics in a insightful way. Just like see a same house common people can only see a house ,but an architect can see only concrete and steel. That is the difference.
Secondly, Feynman is very good at using similar examples and easy-understanding chart to explain some difficult physics knowledge. Once, when he was tried to tell student the size of atom, he gave a similarity ”if an apple is magnified to the size of the earth, then the atoms in the apple are approximately the size of the original apple. ” How easy you may wonder ! He also developed a method of teaching with chart . Some abstract concept , can be rendered concrete and easy understanding by him with a simple. For example, he once explained bonus point(积分) to those do not know it completely with a trails scoring chart(路径积分图), all the people understand it ! And now this trails scoring chart are widely used and are called the Feynman chart in respect of him.
Oh, that is enough. Just the two unique features can make Feynman’s lectures far different from others given by some ordinary teachers. This book, based on his lectures, becomes a classical works on physics. Just as Feynman himself said before death “the most important contribution I have made to the process of physics are research on quantum dynamics electricity, but THE FEYNMAN LECTURES ON PHYSICS”.
