Being asked whether he still finds excitement after his many travels to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Wu said that each time he visits, he chooses as subjects differing elements, he feels fresh excitement, because penetrating the Tibetan-inhabited areas steadily grows his love for Tibetan culture. And he is consumed with a sort of unexplainable relationship with the plateau; his heart moving ever-closer to the land. Wu talks especially of his respect for Tibetan women, “In observing them I found that they have much loftiness and nicety. They work from dawn to night: milking cows, making milk tea, caring for their children, cooking…more hardy than men, yet uncomplaining. From them, I discover the power of life and I want to express it through my paintings.”
Being vice president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Wu Changjiang is driven to try his best to promote the development of Tibetan culture. With the support of Wu and his colleagues, to support young painters in Tibetan regions, the academy trained several groups of Tibetan students and provided them with opportunities for study in Beijing. In addition, they also established programs for researching thangka, a kind of Tibetan painting. In these ways, they protect and carry forward traditional Tibetan cultural art.
At last, I asked him, “Now you have gained great success in painting Tibetan characters. Will you still go to Tibetan regions to sketch?”
“In the beginning, I was just moved by the powerful and vigorous figure of Tibetans. I gradually came to better understand the Tibetan culture, history, civilization and even the living conditions and inner spiritual quest of the Tibetan people. These perceptual elements greatly affect my mental world spiritual quest of the Tibetan people. Although I have drawn some paintings showing the spirit of Tibetans, those paintings are still a bit far from the connotations of their inner world, which is unlimited. That is what I will pursue all my life. It’s for sure that I will still travel there.” Wu’s answer was modest and pure-hearted. Through his paintings, I really feel the Tibetan spirit.
