Darwin became a copious collector of insects, specializing in beetles, and even hired people to scour the bottoms of Cam barges for specimens. The story goes that once, with both hands holding beetle specimens, Darwin spied a third beetle of a particularly rare species. Loathe to divest himself of either beetle in hand, Darwin popped one in his mouth to grab the third. Unfortunately, the one he chose to hold in his mouth was a bombadier beetle, so named because, when threatened, it excretes a caustic combination of fluids with the capacity to scald flesh.
