Although St. Patrick's Day is not a national holiday, it gives a happy excuse for friends to gather and to celebrate.

The traditional color of St. Patrick's Day is green, in honor of the color of Ireland. Ireland is a very rainy country, so the hills are bright green and lovely looking.

The traditional food and drink are beer, corned beef and cabbage, and Irish coffee.

The traditional decorations are shamrocks (Ireland’s national symbol); Irish hats; Irish pipes; pigs (in honor of Saint Patrick and the Irish traditional farm animal); and potatoes (in honor of Ireland's traditional crop).

In San Francisco, Saint Patrick's Day is a popular holiday. On this one day of the year, all citizens are honorary Irish people. Even the Chinese are sure to wear green in honor of Saint Patrick. March 17 is a great day for the Irish in the city that loves the Irish. When the Irish first moved to America they were not well received by the inhabitants. Like all strangers in a strange land, stereotypes grew up around them. People said that they were drunks; that they were "priest ridden"; that they were lazy and not too smart. They also said that they were loveable , fun loving , humorous , good looking , and charming.

The Irish in San Francisco went on to become mayors, politicians, lawyers, doctors, judges, teachers, policemen, trades people, priests and construction people. They helped to create and build up the lovely and strong city by the Golden Gate , San Francisco.

Saint Patrick's Day is the day the Nation and the City remembers the great contributions made to the United States by the Irish. It is a day for merry making, parades, gatherings of friends, and the drinking of many a toast to the old country! Erin Go Braugh! (Ireland Forever!)
