Could you please explain this sentence "中国文化对数的引申太厉害了.而西方很直接"
Could you please show me some Chinese sentences that use the different meanings of 厉害?
I most commonly hear it with the meaning "talented" as in "你好厉害“ You are very talented. I am interested to see how to use it in the other sentences? It seems the different meanings are very different? Is there a reson why it means "talented", is there any connection between "talented" and "severe"/"strict"?

Originally, 厉 means the whetstone. Later on, it means to sharpen, to exite, to activate,etc.
And 害 means damage.
So 厉害 means to be exited, activated and shapen-witted to face and cope with damage and any unfavourable things. e.g. if some one treat the unfavourability severely, it means he is capable and talented.
