Cisco Systems and E-Learning
To cope with competitive and technological changes, more organizations are recognizing that

bers' challenge to make Cisco a
leader in e-learning. All of the
firm's training activities, including
various Web-based training

same time, the ILSG pinpointed
and began developing e-learning
support tools, such as video
servers, templates for content

A primary step was to create
the Field E-Learning Connection,
a learning portal with 8,000 learn-
ing resources available to field
sales employees. Such resources
included online learning content,
PowerPoint presentations, class
schedules, white papers, listings
of materials, books, and videos,
and other items.
Several years later the Con-
nection boasts a 95% utilization
rate by the members of Cisco's
global salesforce. The Connection
contains "learning roadmaps"
covering the jobs of everyone in
the field sales organization. The
roadmaps cover sales, systems,
engineering, and account man-
agement jobs.
With the Field Sales Connec-
tion operational, the ILSG built a
Partner-E-Learning Connection.
This Partner Connection targets
the 40,O00-plus firms that sell
Cisco's products and services in
130 countries worldwide.
The strategic commitment by
Cisco to e-learning has paid off in
a number of ways. First, it has
focused Cisco's training efforts on
getting employees and partners to
needed levels of competencies"
more quickly by using a variety of
training resources, including
e-learning, formal training
courses, attending industry semi-
nars, and other more traditional
means.
Second, e-learning has
resulted in better pass rates by
e-learners for certification tests
than by classroom-trained individ-
uals. Another major benefit that
produces huge cost savings for
Cisco is that the e-learners are not
away at training as much. At
Cisco, e-learning allows em-
ployees to do e-learning while at
their desks. (Some employees put
yellow police tape on their doors
or cubicles when they are busy
with online e-learning activities to
avoid being interrupted.) Even
assembly-line workers have used
e-learning, resulting in savings of
more than $4 million per year in
improved productivity. 1
