Generally speaking, “It took me 10 dollars to buy the book” is not good ,you’d better say “It cost me 10 dollars to buy the book” and “it took me some time to do sth.”.

只是一个语法现象,当主语过长时为了避免头重脚轻现象,用it作形式主语，而将真正的主语放在句子的后面．本句中真正的主语是to buy the book,很显然这个作主语有点太长了，因而用形式主语it代替它．
