Translators have very difficult jobs. Not only do they have to possess a strong understanding of both languages, they also must have knowledge of the history, culture, and literary tradition of both countries. Every language has idioms that can't be translated literally. Only when a translator gains first-hand experience working with both languages as they are used in written and spoken communication can he or she correctly complete translations. More problems are posed when the translator works on poetry. Attempting to preserve rhyme patterns in a different language can be next to impossible. Oftentimes the translator must choose between staying true to the text or the rhythm of the poem.

Employers of translators will definitely be looking for all of the skills described above.
