这句话从法国谚语翻译而来，于17世纪晚期开始在英语中使用。Game 和candle看起来风马牛不相及，它们之间又有什么联系呢？

原来，The game is not worth the candle的说法来源于"纸牌赌博"。我们都知道，17世纪的英国虽然景象繁荣，但是到了晚上，到处漆黑一片。人们只能用蜡烛和煤油灯来照明。虽然蜡烛在今天十分廉价，但是那时一根小小的蜡烛对于每家每户来说却是弥足珍贵的。

比如，和朋友在家里玩牌，挑"灯"夜战，自己却输了。主人非但没有赢钱，反而浪费了一根蜡烛，当然是"得不偿失"了。

之后，the game is not worth the candle的说法迅速传开，用来比喻"某事不值得做，得不偿失"。而它的肯定形式the game is worth the candle也开始被人们使用，表示"值得一做"。
