Retail Sales: 2005 China Retail Ranking
The rankings of China's leading retailers for fast-moving consumer goods, a collaboration between Beijing-based CTR Market Research and CIB, comes into its second term. Compared with last year, the results show multinational retailers are strengthening their market share while domestic players are declining. This trend could continue after China fully opened its retail market last December.

The CTR-CIB joint rankings are based on the sales of fast-moving consumer goods - namely food products and daily chemical products - in 15 cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Dalian, Shenyang, Tianjian, Ji'nan, Qingdao, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and Xi'an. In total, 43 categories of fast-moving consumer goods are examined and 10,000 households in the 15 cities are being surveyed on a continuous basis. Unlike other studies, which track sales from the retailers' side, this joint research focuses on consumers.

Results of the surveys show leading retailers in the rankings normally enjoy characteristics such as large-scale, extensive networking and highly recognized brands. These retailers are able to provide full range of products to meet more consumers' various needs. Consumers show their loyality to these kind of retailers.

Normally, fast-moving consumer goods are inexpensive. However, they still take a relative large share in the spending of Chinese households given consumers' high frequency of purchasing. According to the research, most consumers are very sensitive to prices and promotions. Many cases show that consumers often make the purchasing decision on the spot. Thus, prices and promotions have la arger influence on consumers than the retailers themselves.

On average, the top eleven retailers in the 15 surveyed cities absorb just 23.38 percent of the total sales of fast-moving consumer goods in the relevant city, as traditional stores still play an important role in the consumers' daily purchasing. This indicates that the leading retailers still have a large potential to expand their market share. In the six large cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Dalian, the highest concentration of market share happens in Shanghai where the top eleven retailers account for around 60 percent of the city's fast-moving consumer goods sales. As with last year, Dalian still has the lowest concentration, with the top eleven combining for just 39 percent, three percentage points lower than last year.

The gap between the number one player and the eleventh highest retailer widens. In Beijing, the market share of the top eleven retailers are quite close to each other, with Jingkelong only 4.8 percentage points higher than the eleventh placed New World. However, in Chengdu and Guangzhou, the top retailer, Trust-mart, leads the eleventh place by roughly 14 percentage points. The research finds that there is no absolute leader in Beijing. Jingkelong and Huapu lead the market simply because they have more chain stores than other competitors.

The French retailer Carrefour has become the largest retailer and is also showing fastest growth in most surveyed cities. Its total market share in the 15 cities has reached 4.68 percent. It's attracting more consumers by larger shopping areas, comprehensive product lines and competitive prices. However a limited number of chain stores is believed to be the major bottleneck for the retailer's further growth. This bottleneck could be removed as China implements its WTO commitment by further opening the market to foreign players. The results from the survey show that multinational players are obviously growing faster than their local competitors and this trend is set to continue.

According to China's WTO commitment, the retail market is fully opened to foreign retailers since December 11, 2004. All previous limitations on the geography, number of outlets and equity are lifted. Official statistics show 302 foreign retailers with 3,903 outlets have been approved to run businesses in China.
