A Hong Kong socialite and romance novelist has come up with what will be a must read for the region's nouveau riche1— a pronunciation guide for European designer labels. Accompanying the book is a compact disc which has author Eunice Lam reciting the precise pronunciation of commonly mispronounced names, such as "Louis Vuitton," "Chanel," and "Hermes," the South China Morning Post reported. In Hong Kong, the "H" in "Hermes"is often audible, and "Chanel" is pronounced "Chan," a common Chinese surname, said Lam, adding that her book would spare people from getting red-faced during social gatherings. "These words are not part of the school syllabus and many people mispronounce them. I think that living in a cosmopolitan city, they have to be corrected and guided," Lam, a well-known social butterfly3, was cited as saying. Despite what has turned out to be a protracted economic downturn and suffering for the masses, the opulent lifestyle of Hong Kong's rich has hardly been dented, and demand for goods at the top of the range is as strong as ever.
