In malls, Americans purchase food, clothing, and entertainment in an isolated environment surrounded by parking lots. The Mall of America is said to be the biggest shopping mall in the US.
Shopping in America holds some surprises for Xin. One of the things that surprises her about America is that everything seems so far apart. In China she could go to a clothing store, the university, or a small grocery in one easy bike ride, or even by walking. She could always find many small convenient shops. But it's not the case in America. There, Xin quickly sees that she would need a car because stores are of different kinds and are often spread so far apart. No wonder people call this country "A Nation on Wheels". Another thing is that even the smallest shops have set prices. There never is any bargaining over the price of something. And in grocery stores all the meat is already cut, packaged and wrapped in cellophane. If you want four chicken wings and they come in packages of eight, then you must buy eight.
